Since March 2021, El-Too together with a Swedish partner CentralAsianGrupperna (CAG) launched a project to introduce permaculture initiatives among local women.
Permaculture (the word shortened from two words permanent agriculture) is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability and resilience of natural ecosystems. Permaculture gardens are expected to produce environmentally sustainable agriculture that provides a variety of crops for the family’s needs and contributes to restore local ecosystems.
The goal of the project: Promotion of gender equality, strengthened land rights among women, sustainable livelihoods, food sovereignty and healthy/diversified diets among communities in southern Issyk-Kul region, Kyrgyzstan.
As part of the project, we provided training for 60 rural women from 5 villages on permaculture principles of gardening:
Additionally, we provided training on gender and land rights, food safety and marketing of produced products.
As a result, 90% of our participants developed self-sustainable kitchen gardens and 5 demonstration sites were developed in each village for other villagers to come and learn. In the target area, we organized free judicial consultations for women that had issues connected to land use and land rights. The second component of the project was dedicated to strengthening the capacity of duty bearers in green economy and land rights through a series of training and meeting with women.
